Patrick Wallis Burke (1928–2020)

I just learned of Patrick Wallis Burke's passing in August 2020. This sucks.

Patrick Wallis Burke was a British designer and educator who was the editor and designer of the excellent Icograda/ICoD publication Icographic. The magazine was a quarterly international visual communication design review featuring lovely cover designs. You can download scans of all the issues here.

In 2008, Patrick discovered an AisleOne post about Icographic, and he reached out to me via email. I was stunned! A designer I respected wanted to chat with me?? He was kind and excited that designs he had made decades before were still being appreciated.

We had a friendly discussion about his work for Icographic, and then he offered me his set of Icographic issues. I was floored. I offered to pay him for the magazines, but he wouldn't hear it. The package arrived at my door a week later with a touching note he had typed. Of all the vintage artifacts in my collection, I cherish this set of Icographic and note the most.
